OUR HISTORY

Since its founding in 1972, Beit Knesset Moreshet Yisrael  served as a home for Jerusalem's English speaking community and travelers from all corners of the world. Divrei Torah are delivered in English and Hebrew and our siddurim and chumashim are also in both languages.  Our services are fully egalitarian.

Founded in 1972 by dedicated olim from the United States, Moreshet Yisrael is the spiritual heir of the first Conservative minyan in Jerusalem which included Dr. Judah Magnes, Chancellor of Hebrew University, and Henrietta Szold, founder of Hadassah.

Beit Knesset Moreshet Yisrael is an integral part of Israeli society. We are involved in numerous educational and philanthropic projects (such as our outreach programming which collects funds for the IDF Immigrant Soldiers in Need Fund, and Special Child Fund). We were a founding partner of the Conservative Yeshiva, which has grown to occupy its own quarters.

In 1985, Israel’s President Chaim Herzog, said that “the synagogue stands for religious tolerance, Jewish brotherhood and Zionism, values that are not only necessary now but are essential for our national survival and for the building of the Jewish nation.”

We have been served by 3 rabbis since 1972: Rabbi Dr. Yosef Green until his retirement in 1993; Rabbi Hazzan Dr. Avraham Feder until his retirement in 2003; from 2003-2005 Rabbi Hazzan Avinoam Sharon served as spiritual leader while he was still in rabbinical school. Since 2005 our spiritual leader is Rabbi Adam Frank.

The synagogue has a reputation of providing a meaningful and enthusiastic tefilah experience combined with Torah teachings that provoke, stimulate and motivate participants toward increased intensity of Jewish engagement.  Conservative Judaism is intended to be the nexus between Jewish tradition and the modern world -- Moreshet Yisrael is that meeting place.
